Where to start. I'll try to keep this short.
After having worked with animals for almost 17 years, I decided I needed a change...at least for a little while. I still work with animals, just not full time.
Why did I decide to become a nail technician?
Why not?
I used to paint my nails often and loved to dabble in nail art. But it was just simply a hobby for me. I never dreamed that this would become a career.
I say there are two people that I give credit to my decision to become a nail technician. My Dad and Lori Halloway, who you may better know as the Meticulous Manicurist. When my Dad was ill and I became his caregiver, I wanted to be able to give him a proper pedicure. I was already confident enough to give him a manicure but giving someone a pedicure seemed like such a daunting task. So I turned to You Tube for help. There I found the Meticulous Manicurist and I began to follow her channel. She gave me the confidence I needed to pamper my Dad, if only just a little bit. My Dad did pass away from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2018.
I never stopped watching the Meticulous Manicurist. One day, as I was sitting around not doing much of anything, I thought about how there are probably other caregivers who would like to pamper their loved ones but, as it is with many people, nail care (especially foot care), gets put to the side. What if I could help? If even just a little.
So I reached out to Lori and asked her what she thought of this "crazy" idea I had. My idea is to start an organization or group of nail technicians that will provide nail care services to those being cared for by caregivers, in their homes or wherever they may find themselves. Lori thought this was a great idea and off to school I went.
I graduated the manicuring program at L'esprit Academy in Royal Oak, MI in 2021. I became a licensed nail technician very shortly after that and almost immediately began working in a salon. I regularly attend classes, workshops, and trade shows as I believe that you should never stop learning.
My five year goal is to start that organization/group to help people being cared for by caregivers. In the meantime, I help people in the salon. People need help with their nail care, especially when it comes to the feet. I think most people assume getting your nails done is mostly about having pretty nails. Sure, it can be. But really, it is so much more than that. I help people achieve their goals to have happy, healthy feet.
